44 Kitchen Decor Ideas to Transform Your Cooking Space

PUBLISHED IN ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST | WRITTEN BY SARAH LYON

“Maggie Clarke, the founder of Maggie Clarke Interiors in Memphis, thought beyond the basics when styling the shelves in a Collierville, Tennessee home. “We always prefer to style with items that are meaningful to our clients versus pulling random accessories from our studio,” she says. “To add a collected feel amongst the more contemporary elements, we used her grandmother’s antique urns and china on the open pastry shelving.”

12 Paint Colors That Will Make Any Room Look Bigger

PUBLISHED IN SOUTHERN LIVING | WRITTEN BY HEATHER BIEN

“A calming blue-green is a lovely choice for giving a space a more expansive feel, particularly when the entire room is color drenched from top to bottom to create uninterrupted lines.

"This type of paint application helps to create the illusion of a continuous, larger space. We recommend taking the paint color up to the ceiling and even on the trim for a harmonious look," says Clarke, who always does the ceiling 50% lighter.”

Remaking a Classic

“This Midtown home had all the beauty and elegance of a true Southern Belle. She needed some work, however, to bring her up to date. Not too much work, though. The project would need just the right person at the helm; someone who would respect the house’s character yet liven it up for the young couple who were the new owners.”

Storybook Charm: A Midtown Bungalow

PUBLISHED IN RIVER CITY LIFESTYLE | WRITTEN BY AMY BIRDSONG GOLDEN

“A young professional in her early 30s found a Midtown bungalow built in 1917 to call home. It had been recently renovated and the interiors freshly painted, but it was in need of a character boost. The homeowner enlisted Maggie Clarke Interiors to help integrate the old with some new.

“The homeowner travels to France every year with her family to source beautiful furniture, art and home decor. To say she already had an amazing collection is an understatement,” says Maggie, design principal at MCI.”

Top Trends in Trim, From Colorful to Classic

“Maggie Clarke Interiors took on the challenge to bring a bare and uninviting living room the kind of personality and coziness the space craved. “We chose a midtone paint color by Sherwin-Williams, Quietude SW 6212 (218-C2), to set the mood and went from there,” Maggie says. “With the client’s antique pieces, we mixed in some contemporary pieces like the coffee tables and a geometric textile on a few throw pillows. The end result is an inviting space that feels timeless but modern at the same time.”

"I love color. I know a lot of people are into whites, but I love the colors," homeowner Julie Upchurch told Maggie Clarke very early on in the process of redesigning the East Memphis home Upchurch and her family had just purchased in late 2021. Clarke, owner of a self-named local design firm, paired that idea with another concept she discovered early on in her professional relationship with her new client.”

“I cannot believe I live here," says Chenobia Webster-Hill of her 3,200-square-foot Memphis, TN, home. Chenobia grew up in South Memphis and was a single mom by 14; she had her second child at 17. "Everyone told me I would be nothing." They were wrong. […] To personalize the space, the Hills hired Memphis designer Maggie Clarke, and together they filled the rooms with furniture and artwork the couple loves. "There's no way this should be my life," says Chenobia, who's now a college professor. "But I've earned every bit of it."

Bold Refinement

“Ready to refresh their primary bath, a Lakeland couple recently called on Maggie Clarke, owner of Maggie Clarke Interiors. The designer's creation blends bold with refined, classic with transitional, to produce a space that will stand the test of time.

Although the project entailed taking the room down to the studs - she was able to work within the original architectural footprint to bring it up to the moment.

Soaring ceilings give the bath huge expanses of wall space, a feature Clarke decided from the start had to be played up. " knew that I wanted to do something super fun on that wall because it's such a focal point. We thought about a lot of options and ended up going with a large-scale porcelain ceramic tile with a marble look."

“No dedicated home office? No problem. Interior designer Maggie Clarke, CEO of Maggie Clarke Interiors, recommends placing your desk and chair inside a bay window. "A Feng Shui specialist would tell you to be sure to face the inside of the room as you work," she says. "This creates a sense of security so you can see who is approaching you." Don't forget to add a window treatment to block harsh sun rays.”

“Maggie Clarke, interior stylist and designer at Maggie Clarke Interiors comments: 'When we get a kitchen renovation or remodel project, in terms of lighting we always start with overhead fixture lighting. In a kitchen, that's usually two pendant lights over a kitchen island or peninsula. Alternatively, if you have a galley kitchen or a kitchen sans an island, you could go with a linear or standard chandelier or semi-flush mount. Installing a fixture in the kitchen is a tad bit unexpected, which is what Maggie Clarke Interiors is all about.”

6 Pretty Ways to Decorate With Emerald Green

“If you’re not quite ready to go all in, then interior designer Maggie Clarke of Maggie Clarke Interiors recommends using neutral shades and pieces to center the color as opposed to making it the central focus.

“[I recommend] using a neutral base for big items like the sofa, rug, and accompanying chairs,” she says. “To make a big punch, throw in some emerald velvet armchairs. You can repeat this color throughout the room with throw pillows and accessories (like this vase). The room still reads neutral, but definitely not boring!”

“Defining the cooking area in this home, where the kitchen and living room area are in fact one, was done by means of a cool metro tile idea.

Interior designer and CEO, Maggie Clarke, of full-service design firm Maggie Clarke Interiors HQ in Memphis, TN comments, 'Subway tile is an inexpensive way to add interest in your kitchen. It's often 1/4th of the price of other choices like marble tile, yet you still achieve that classic + elegant look. Try having your tile company install it in a non-traditional way such as a step ladder or herringbone pattern. You could also choose a beveled subway tile, which gives off a sparkly shine.'“

A 500-Square-Foot Backyard Guest House Is the Perfect Blend of Vintage and Contemporary

PUBLISHED ON APARTMENT THERAPY

“Our home was built in 1910 and the main reason we purchased it, was the tiny detached guest house in the backyard. My husband is from England and my sister lives in LA, so we have guests all the time. When we found this house, the main house was newly renovated (not exactly to our taste, but we’re working on it). The guest house itself was basically a dilapidated shed. It appeared to have been untouched since the 1950s. Our contractor and his team gutted it to the studs and we got to start fresh. It has turned out even better than I imagined. It’s perfectly cozy and curated. I love to escape back here to work on my interior design business when no one is visiting.”

“The heart of Cooper Young, a Memphis neighborhood known for its classic cottages and bungalows, might not seem like the expected setting for a new subdivision, but this home in developer Griffin Elkington’s Cooper Station proves that old and new, traditional and contemporary can coexist beautifully.

As with all 15 homes built by Elkington on the former industrial site, architect David Anderson designed the house’s exterior elevation to include traditional features fans of quintessential Midtown architecture love—clean lines, large windows, a welcoming front entry. The inside, however, takes a much more modern tone, thanks to the work of designer Maggie Clarke, owner of Maggie Clarke Interiors.”

"As an alternative to a dining table, gathering around a kitchen island is a relaxed and casual dining experience," suggests designer Monique Lhuillier, who has her own dinnerware collection, available at Pottery Barn. "Instead of a tablecloth, place a runner down the center and use my Juliana Scalloped Three Tiered Stand to save space while creating fun dinner ideas that bring the family together."

If you're renovating or remodeling, interior stylist Maggie Clarke suggests placing a slight countertop overhang on a kitchen island or peninsula: "This will double as counter and dining space."
